The Southland Star was the first of two new buildings by
Bremer Vulkan's for Blue Star Line in 1967 for the Australia & New Zealand
service. Fitted with Stülcken heavy derricks, I believe to carry the machinery
for the Manapouri Hydroelectric Scheme
in South Island, New Zealand. With the introduction of containerisation,
she was converted to a cellular containership by her original builders
in 1977
