When I joined her as Chief Officer in Jebel Ali in November 1986, she had been laid up for 6 months, completely dead. A complement of Deck and Engineer Officers, including my good friend Chief Engineer Randal
Berry, re-activated the ship over a two week period and subsequently sailed the vessel to Capetown for dry-dock. A few days before departure from Jebel Ali,
the late Mike Windass took me to one side, and in his inimitable gruff manner said
"Congratulations John lad, you've got the Old Mans' job!' Such was the beginning of a baptism of fire - PRC (mainland Chinese) Crew with only the commissar speaking any English, and having to learn to be Catering Officer
as well as Captain. I ended up commanding the ship for 3 years, mostly running from Valparaiso to
Philadelphia with fruit.
