The Queensland Star was one of two ships built for the "Colony" trade to Australia & New Zealand. Of similar hull to the Rockhampton Star which was built at Birkenhead by Cammell Laird & Company Ltd. with Burmeister & Wain engines, rather than the Doxford's of the Queensland Star.

As was Blue Star Line's habit, she was suitably named for her original service to Australia. In 1972 she was placed on the South America service, when the remaining passenger ships were withdrawn from that  service and  renamed Brasilia Star.
