Painting by Paul Barnes, Bosun of the Far Turbot

The Far Turbot is an AHTS (Anchor Handling Tug Supply) vessel designed to tow oil rigs and to place their anchors in position. Oil rigs having no means of their own to carry out this operation, it is the job of an AHTS vessel to run the anchors out from the rig and place them on the seabed. Likewise when a rig needs to shift, the anchors are raised by an AHTS, while the wires are winched back to the rig. The Far Turbot is getting on in years and has been largely superseded by more powerful vessels. In recent years she has been, during the winter months on charter jointly to HM Coastguard and the French Coastguard as a Salvage Tug guarding the Straits of Dover. During the summer months she has carried out Barge Handling operations for pipelaying vessels.

During January 2002 she went to the assistance of the tanker Pointe du Sablon  of 4,470 DWT and owned by the French Navy. The Pointe du Sablon  had suffered power failure and was at anchor off Boulogne. She was towed to her destination of  Dunkerque to discharge her cargo.
