The Colorado Star was originally built as a conventional vessel as the Raeburn. With the development of containerisation on the West Coast of America (USA), she was modified at Cammell Lairds around  1967 to carry 20 ft. containers on deck. Below decks, the hatches were squared-off to carry palletised cargo. Additionally the derrick topping-lifts were fitted with electric winches.

Like other West Coast traders, the voyage schedule was from Glasgow &  Liverpool, out though the Panama Canal  to Long Beach (Los Angeles), San Francisco, Redwood City, Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, B.C. the terminal port. Returning southbound further calls may have been made to San Francisco and Long Beach.
