Andalucia Star  was one of the new A-Class ships, designed  in Norway and apart from the Avila Star  was built at Middlesbrough. Designed as refrigerated fruit carriers, primarily for bananas being fitted with side (banana) doors  and air change fans, for loading in Central American ports. Initially most had long term five year charters to the Standard Fruit Corporation, carrying bananas from Costa Rica, Honduras,  and Columbia to US East Coast and European ports. This they did very successfully. In later years they carried a multitude of refrigerated cargoes from deciduous & citrus fruits, as well as frozen meat.

Several Blue Star ships were laid up in Barry, South Wales over several summers in the late 1970's. This was brought on partially by the trade sanctions imposed against South Africa's Apartheid system. Ships which normally carried out the South African Fruit Trade during the season, were no longer able to trade to South African ports. Barry became a Blue Star Car Park, with a steady rotation of vessels including the America Star ,  Fremantle Star and Townsville Star .

Like her sister-ship, the Avelona Star 2 she was chartered by the MoD for service to the Falkland Islands. A flight-deck was fitted aft for helicopter operations, a tannoy system was fitted through out the holds and additional radio and encoding equipment fitted. Additionally the swimming pool was plated over and a fresh water producing osmosis plant fitted.

Since being sold by Blue Star Line, she was converted into a chilled orange juice carrier at Bremer Vulkan's, with tanks fitted in No.2 to 5 Holds in 1986. She is used to transport orange juice from Santos to Europe. The photographs below show her in Santos loading in March 2005, at the ripe old age of 30 years!
